ANNUAL EVENTS

Summer Planning Retreat

Held during our summer break, the purpose of our summer retreat is to spend some time discussing, setting and planning the major goals for next club year. Along with a fun warm up activity, we discuss current issues, determine allocations of funds, and discuss possible meeting programs. A breakfast buffet is provided as well as a delicious box lunch. The retreat gives members the opportunity to get to know each other better in an informal relaxed atmosphere without the usual time constraints of our two-hour dinner meetings.

Fall Workshop

These local day long workshops are a great opportunity for many newer members to hear about Soroptimist activities beyond Los Angeles and to interact with Soroptimist International members from other clubs. The agenda provides a chance to exchange ideas with other local members as well as learn about their programs.

Christmas at the Shelter

SILA members annually gather at a local battered women’s shelter to help the children and their mothers have a more joyous Christmas. During this event, the children select and wrap gifts for their moms staying at the shelter. The children have their pictures taken for a Christmas card that goes along with the gifts they select for their mothers. Each child gets to select a special treat for him/herself. It is hard to determine who enjoys this event more: our members, the children or their mothers. In any case, this visit is a fine way to celebrate the Christmas season.

Day of Service

Annually, all Soroptimist Clubs are encouraged to participate in a “Saturday Day of Service.” Toward this goal, SILA members and friends meet at the Downtown Women’s Center (DWC) to prepare and serve breakfast or lunch to about 100 women. During these visits, members learn more about DWC’s programs which provide a safe and healthy community to downtown homeless women. All agree it was a most interesting and satisfying activity.  Learn more about the Downtown Women’s Center.

Annual Awards Luncheon

One of the most anticipated SILA events is our annual luncheon. Various local restaurants including the Los Angeles Athletic Club, Wilshire Country Club and the Castaway in Burbank, have hosted this gala event. Friends, family, and local dignitaries as well as our award winners attend. Annual highlights include a silent auction with items donated by members and friends and the presenting of four annual awards to deserving women. Read about our 90th Year of Service celebration.
